Something I see all too often is people allowing their political beliefs to ruin their relationships. I’ve heard people in business settings say things like “I can’t stand him, he’s a Republican” or “don’t waste your time talking to that Liberal.”

Those of us that are interested in politics have some strong beliefs that we’re really passionate about. And yes, it’s fine to think that people on the other side of a particular issue are wrong. But don’t let it get in the way of your friendship or relationship.

I have a lot of good friends that I completely disagree with when it comes to politics. So we treat elections like sporting events – we talk trash up until the event, and then afterwards the one whose team (party/candidate) wins gets to boast a little bit. But we don’t get into heated arguments because it’s not worth it.

Remember, people with drastically different political beliefs can live harmony – even if they work in politics. Look at Jim Carville (who worked on John Kerry’s campaign) and his wife, Mary Matalin (who worked on President Bush’s re-election campaign) – can you imagine their dinner conversations in the days leading up to the 2004 election?
