Hi James
Bill gets an A for the whole lecture he gave.
When watching the video
http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/bill_gates_unplugged.html
I couldn't see the mosquitoes. It seems there were very few of them.
Regarding the prop catching the eyes of the audience during the speech - Yes, he has done it. But when looking at the physical surrounding and how the stage is organized, it looks like a very smart thing to do.

James. I do agree with your comment on how to use props. It is a big mistake speakers do. But it doesn't apply in this case.
I also think that the famous Randy Pausch Last Lecture: Achieving Your Childhood Dreams http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ji5_MqicxSo&fmt=18
is another good example of using props.

Hi James, I saw that about the mosquitoes. Quite a moment I'm sure for many of the attendees. Similar to that scene in the Erin Brockvich & PG&E movie starring Julia Roberts - where she tells the reps from the company that their drinking tainted water. TED.com is an awesome site. They have the most fantastic talks. I've try to catch 'em all. I especially liked the one on statistical presentation, which showed some awesome technology (I believe now available on Goggle). http://www.ted.com/talks/view/id/316
