If you’re not familiar with both Facebook and LinkedIn, they are definitely worth checking out. There are dozens of social networking sites out there, but these two are among the most popular.
LinkedIn is geared more towards business professionals where Facebook was created for high school and college students (however it has recently been repositioned for those of us out of school). Both sites have their benefits and they are the only two I’m currently using (I wrote a review of LinkedIn a few months back in my e-zine).
I recommend trying both out as they each have cool features. Michael Port recently did a podcast with some excellent advice about how to promote your business on these services. You can listen to the podcast on Michael’s blog.

Hi, Thank you for adding me to your blogroll. I would like to add you to my blogroll as well. If you would not mind writing a 3-4 line promotional description for your blog that would be very helpful. If not I can write something. Regardless thank you very much I am honored.

[...] Social media’s downside is mainly in the quality of leads – you really don’t know who you’re talking to and it’s easy for dishonest people to take advantage of social media neophytes. If your goal is to connect with people on a local scale, it may be difficult to find locals on the services you use and it’s easy to get distracted helping people who live too far away to do business with you.
