Winnie Cooper on Math

Danica McKellar who played Winnie Cooper on The Wonder Years TV show has written a book called “Math Doesn’t Suck: How to Survive Middle-School Math Without Losing Your Mind or Breaking a Nail.” The title is catchy, but most importantly, I think the concept is great. It’s targeted at girls who are at one of the most awkward stages of their lives, and reinforces the message that being smart is better than being dumb.

Danica isn’t a “pop tart” like many of the women her age in Hollywood that make the headlines. She majored in Math at UCLA and graduated summa cum laude, does a fair amount of work for charities and doesn’t make the news for driving drunk or showing up in public in various states of undress.

With so many bad role models for young girls, I think it’s great that Danica is doing some positive things. It would be great to see more stories about women like Danica and Ivanka Trump. Ivanka recently stated in an interview that she didn’t like being compared to other “heiresses” because she actually works for a living. What a concept!
